Face and Neck Laser Hair Removal: How Many Sessions for Permanent Results?

I'll be honest, I get asked this question a lot. Usually by someone who's already spent years shaving, threading, plucking at midnight with a tiny mirror under bad bathroom lighting. And the hair's back within a week anyway.

So if you're in Wallington, Sutton, Croydon, or anywhere around that South London belt and you've finally decided to look into laser, good. But you want a real number, not a brochure number. So let's talk about it properly.

Okay, So How Many Sessions Actually?

Most places will quote you 6 to 8 sessions. That's the standard line you'll see everywhere.

For face and neck specifically, though, it's usually a bit more than that. Think 8 to 10.

Why? Because facial hair behaves differently to, say, your legs. It's finer. It's also often tied to hormones, which means more of your follicles are just sitting there dormant, waiting their turn, and the laser can only actually zap a follicle when the hair in it is in its active growing phase. So you keep coming back every 4 to 6 weeks to catch the ones that were asleep last time.

Doesn't matter if you're getting a facial hair removal treatment for just the upper lip, or the whole full face laser hair removal package covering cheeks, jaw and chin the logic's the same. It's just that bigger areas naturally need the full run.

Why You Might Need More Sessions Than Your Friend Did

This bit's important and honestly most articles skip it.

Two people can walk into the same clinic with what looks like the exact same "problem" and come out with completely different plans. Here's what actually moves that number around.

Dark, coarse hair takes to the laser well because there's more pigment for it to grab onto. Fine or light hair, on the other hand, takes longer, and sometimes it just won't fully respond no matter how many sessions you do.

Hormones play a big part too. If you've got something like PCOS, your hair keeps getting a reason to grow back, so your women's facial hair removal plan will probably need a top-up every 6 to 12 months even after the main course is finished. That's not the treatment failing, by the way. That's just how hormonal hair works, and any clinic worth going to should tell you this upfront rather than let you find out later.

Skin tone matters less than it used to, honestly. Lasers have gotten a lot better at working across different skin tones. But your practitioner still has to dial the settings in carefully for you, and that can shift the number slightly.

And then there's just... which bit of your face you're doing. A course for only the chin is a different thing to a full face and neck laser hair removal course. Smaller single areas like the upper lip or eyebrows are often done in 6 to 8. Full face and neck, being bigger and more hormone-sensitive, tends to sit at 8 to 10.

What "Permanent" Even Means Here

Nobody really explains this bit before you pay, so let me.

"Permanent hair reduction" isn't usually zero hair forever. What it actually means for most people is a proper, lasting reduction, somewhere around 80 to 90 percent less hair after the full course. Whatever does grow back tends to be much finer and lighter, so it's barely noticeable.

If your growth is hormone-driven, a light top-up once or twice a year keeps it looking clean. Again, that's normal. That's not you doing something wrong.

What It Actually Looks Like Session By Session

Say you start a full face laser hair removal course in, I don't know, January.

Sessions 1 to 3, you probably won't see much change. That's normal, don't panic.

By session 4 to 6, hair starts coming back slower and finer.

Somewhere around session 7 to 10 is where most people notice the real drop.

Sessions are usually spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, so a full 10-session course can end up taking 10 to 14 months start to finish. Sounds long when you write it down. But most people booking this have already been dealing with the hair for years, sometimes since their teens. A year is nothing next to that.

Mistakes I See People Make Constantly

Stopping after 3 sessions because "it's not working" this is the big one. Those first few sessions are foundation work. The results show up later, not immediately.

Plucking or waxing in between sessions. This pulls hair out from the root, which is literally the thing the laser needs to target next time. If you have to remove hair between appointments, shave instead, don't pull it.

Booking a single one-off session instead of a proper package. One session alone almost never gives you lasting results. Packages of 6 or 10 exist because that's genuinely what your hair's growth cycle needs, not because someone's trying to upsell you.

Turning up with a fresh tan. Tanned skin and laser don't get along well, it affects both safety and how well the treatment works, so keep the sun exposure down around appointment time.

Picking a clinic purely on price. Rushed, cut-rate settings often mean you end up needing more sessions in the long run, not fewer, so it works out costing more anyway.

A Few Things People Ask Me

How many sessions for full face and neck laser hair removal?

Usually 8 to 10, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Smaller single areas like the chin or upper lip alone can sometimes wrap up in 6 to 8.

Does it hurt?

Most people describe it as a quick snap, like a rubber band flicking your skin. Generally more bearable than waxing or threading the same spot.

Will the hair grow back once I'm done?

For most people, growth drops by 80 to 90 percent and stays that way for years. If it's hormone-driven, you might want a light top-up once or twice a year.

Can I still do this if I have PCOS?

Yes, just mention it at your consultation. You'll likely need more sessions than average, plus the odd maintenance visit down the line.

How far apart should the sessions be?

4 to 6 weeks is standard. Booking them closer together won't speed anything up, the treatment has to work with your hair's own growth cycle.

What I'd Actually Tell You to Do

If you've been dealing with this for years, here's the honest truth: there's no single magic number that applies to everyone. Your real answer comes out of an actual consultation, where someone looks at your hair, your skin, your history, and works out a plan around you specifically.

Go in expecting somewhere between 6 and 10 sessions, not a quick fix in 2 or 3. That's what actually gets you real, lasting results, not just a smooth face for a fortnight.
